Cocke County Grand Jury
The Cocke County Grand Jury meeting this week returned indictments naming a number of individuals. James Spence, 28, Banks Road, Newport is charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated assault resulting in bodily injury, theft and criminal trespass. The charges stem from a May incident in which Jerrod Turner was robbed of a cellphone, cash and a pocketknife in the Edwina community. The indictments say Turner was assaulted with sticks, and required hospital treatment. Trevor Justice Corbell, 24. Knoxville is charged with evading arrest by motor vehicle, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, DUI, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, resisting arrest, and violation of the implied consent law. The charges stem from a pursuit in June by Newport Patrol Officer Paul Weber and Deputy Lt. Michael Whitmer, in which the deputy's cruiser was damaged. There was a 15 year-old male passenger with Corbell. Corbell also is charged in a separate case with aggravated rape, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and theft over $1,000, stemming from a June incident. William “Billy” Hance, 47, Old Sevierville Highway, Newport, is charged with offenses stemming from a July pursuit by Newport patrol Officer Chris Silvers. He is charged with failure to yield to emergency vehicles, evading arrest by motor vehicle, failure to maintain lane, driving on a revoked license, reckless endangerment, no insurance, failure to obey traffic device, reckless driving and failure to exercise due care. And then Hance later was charged with escape after he fled from officers while handcuffed.
