Jefferson County fatality
A 16 year-old Newport girl died Sunday morning in a two vehicle crash in Jefferson County. Trooper Erik Raines said Makinna Smith died in the crash in the 1600 block of East Highway 25/70, at about 9:48 am. Smith operating a 2006 Chevrolet Bolt was westbound when her auto crossed into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2018 Nissan Rogue SUV, operated by Patsy C. Thomas, 74, Morristown. After impact, the Smith vehicle crossed back over the westbound lane and stopped on the right hand side of the roadway. The Thomas auto careened to the right and rolled coming to rest on it's top. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts and Ms. Thomas sustained injuries, however the crash report does not identify the hospital to which she was taken and does not detail the extent of her injuries. Makinna was an 11th grader at Jefferson County High School. According to a social media post she was a carhop at Sonic Drive In.
