Cyclists injured by tire tread
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says two cyclists were injured Sunday afternoon when a tire tread from a tractor trailer flew off and hit them as they traveled on Interstate 40 in Jefferson County. Patricia Shiverdecker, 58, Maryville was operating a Bomba three-wheeled motorcycle, and Alexis Phillips, 25, Alcoa was riding a two-wheeled Yamaha at the time of the 4:18 pm incident. Both cycles were eastbound near the 411 mile marker at the time they were struck. "A tire tread from an unidentified Tractor Trailer became airborne, striking vehicle 1 and driver in the far front and steering mechanism, additionally hitting the driver in right side arm and hand region. The tire tread then traveled back striking vehicle two and driver in same areas," the report says. A medical helicopter put down at a nearby truckstop and both cyclists were sent to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville for treatment.
