Mortimer alleges kidnapping
Newport and Cocke County authorities are investigating an alleged incident that involved the kidnapping of a bail bondsman on September 25. Samuel Mortimer 39, Blue Mill Road, Del Rio told Newport Captain Terry Lawson he was with Shannon Lafner, 33, Carson Springs Road, Newport, when he was kidnapped. At the time of the incident, Mortimer was operating a pickup truck owned by a North Carolina bail bondsman, but Mortimer denied he was trying to take Lafner into custody. The incident also allegedly involved Eddie McCoig, 39, of the same address on Carson Springs Road. Mortimer says the men handcuffed him, stabbed him and beat him, at a residence in Del Rio. They allegedly drove him on the bed of the pickup, before parking at Wal Mart. The victim reported he freed himself and chased his assailants with a tire iron at which time Lafner and McCoig fled on foot. The victim sustained a large bruise to his eye, handcuff marks and a puncture wound but he refused medical treatment. Cocke County Deputy Lt. Chris Gregg and Detective Eric Ramsey also are involved in the investigation.
