Cocke CLB meet
Members of the Cocke County Legislative Body spent alot of time at Monday evening's meeting talking about a review of the contract to sell acreage in the new Highway 25E Industrial Park to Eternal Beverage Company. Last month the body agreed to have the agreement vetted by a third-party law firm before the purchase is finalized. So last evening there was discussion about the estimated cost of $7,500 to $10,000 for such a review. And there were questions about how the fee would be paid. Commissioner Forest Clevenger argued against taking the money from economic development which already is strapped for funding, but a motion for the money to come from the county's General Fund was defeated. Eventually, Commissioner Gary Carver made a motion to approve the vetting process funding, but to leave unanswered, the question as to where the funding will come from. The body also modified a previously passed resolution to earmark two cents on the tax rate for environmental, engineering and site preparation for the proposed justice center and jail on Cope Boulevard. Commissioner Terry Dawson said state officials have told him that Cocke County has met the required reduction in the amount of trash that is currently being landfilled. Dawson has been calling for a Landfill Committee meeting to discuss various issues regarding the county convenience centers, however Commissioner Clevenger suggested that committee meetings may be called by the chairman, and need not be called by the mayor's office. So a meeting has been called for 6pm December 3 in the Chancery Courtroom. The body also accepted the resignation of Doug Shoemaker from the Cocke County Regional Planning Commission. His seat will not be filled because of an earlier decision to reduce the number of members on the planning commission.
