Commission recommends renaming of streets Members of the Newport Planning Commission on Tuesday voted to recommend to the Newport City Council that it approve the re-naming of River Street, River Road and possibly East Main Street. The proposal calls for renaming the street "Water's Edge", because it runs parallel to the Pigeon River. Paul and Kim Gregg have been pushing for a name change, suggesting the current names carry with them a sigma of years of neglect. Now the Gregg's are working to upgrade the area. "Our Vision for this area is for it to become a beautiful, thriving and desirable community. The new name would complement the positive changes that are occurring with the efforts of revitalization," argue the Gregg's. They point out that there are 54 properties with 34 owners on the street. None of the property owners voiced objection at a November 14 public forum and only one asked to be excluded from any change, during a November 12 city council meeting. Chair Cecil Gilland said in the past if there have been property owners opposed to a change, it has not been implemented, and he pointed to the issues that go along with an address change. But State Planner Dan Hawk said the planning commission does not have a role in re-naming streets, which is the responsibility of the city council. But the commission does have a responsibility for community development and planning. "One of the things that has been demonstrated with the change of a street name, is to improve the future of that area. To sort of redefine that area as a place people want to be," the planner argued. "In reality, this seems to be a good move for that area of the city. What I would suggest to you is that a potential street name change could benefit that area because it has had a shadow over it for awhile." He went on to say that action would contribute to "the long and lasting effect on the improved community atmosphere." And so Hawk suggested the body move the issue to the city council for its consideration. The body also gave its approval to a planned expansion of the Weigel's store on Heritage Boulevard. Plans call for adding restrooms at the rear of the building for truckers who use the adjacent Weigel's truck stop for re-fueling. In addition, a kiosk will be built at the front of the store to house the cash registers.
