Shelton enters guilty plea
In Cocke County Circuit Court this week, a man facing a large number of charges negotiated a plea agreement that was accepted by Judge Carter Moore. Richard Shelton, 59, Melrose Way, Newport, was the object of a pursuit in May, by Newport Patrol Officer Joshyua Shults. During the chase, Shelton crashed his car leaving his two passengers with injuries. In the plea agreement, the kidnapping charge was reduced to false imprisonment, and he pleaded guilty to evading arrest, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and DUI. In April, Shelton was charged with shoplifting $450 worth of items from Priceless Foods, and then attempting to run over the store employee who came after him. He also was charged with shoplifting from Food City on two occasions. As a result Shelton was charged with three counts of theft and aggravated assault. In another case, the defendant is charged with a violation of the sex offender registry. Judge Moore gave Shelton an eight year sentence suspended to time he has served, with the balance on supervised probation. He also was assessed fines in the cases and was ordered to make restitution totaling $941. Shelton also was ordered to have no contact with Priceless Foods.
