Cocke County home fires
Fire agencies in Cocke County recently fought two home fires. A log home in the Del Rio community was destroyed on Tuesday. Cocke County Fire Chief Keith Large said the fire in the Civility Haywood home was reported at about 11:30 am. The first firefighters on the scene reported the home, owned by Lily Lubois, was fully engulfed in flames. "The Cabin Ridge Way road up to the site, near the Christy Mission, was very rough and firefighters had to use a mini-pumper to shuttle water to the fire," Chief Large said. The flames then spread to a nearby wooded area, before the fire was extinguished. In addition to the Cocke County Fire Department, volu8nteer units from Del Rio, Grassy Fork, Long Creek and Madison County, NC also participated in the fire fighting effort. The loss in the blaze is placed at $75,000. A single story frame home on Jay Way in the Hartford community was destroyed by fire on Wednesday. Walt Cross, Chief of the Grassy Fork Volunteer Fire Department said the home was reported on fire at 11:38 am. The owner of the residence, Robin Webb was away at the time the fire was reported but told firefighters a fire had been started in the wood stove in the kitchen area, earlier in the morning. In addition to Grassy Fork, the Cocke County Fire Department and Cosby Volunteer Fire Department assisted in fighting the fire which destroyed the home which Cross said was built in 1918. The loss is placed at $65,000.
