Hopland couple still on board the Diamond Princess An Elizabethton couple was not allowed to leave the cruise ship Diamond Princess on Sunday because the wife tested positive for coronavirus. Dr. Arnold and Jeannie Hopland are aboard the cruise ship off the coast of Japan. An evacuation of US citizens began on Sunday but Japanese health officials say Mrs. Hopland has tested positive for the very contagious virus. Dr. Hopland so far has tested negative but said he intends to stay on board the ship with his wife. Passengers on the ship have been quarantined for almost 2 weeks. The couple was just about to leave their cabin to board a bus for a ride to the airport when they were notified of the positive test. But now the future is uncertain. The couple believes they won’t be allowed back in the United States until late March when they no longer test positive for the virus. Ms. Hopland says if she had been allowed to leave the ship initially she would not have the virus. The couple has been confined to their room but recently the ship employee who brought them food, tested positive for the virus.
