Kathy Holt is sentenced
A former Newport alderwoman on Monday entered guilty pleas to charges of theft and failure to appear for a court hearing, in Cocke County Circuit Court. The "best interest" plea agreement, however, provides for a probation violation to be dismissed. Kathy Holt, 55, Chestnut Ridge Way, Newport, recently was indicted by a Cocke County Grand Jury. In March 2015, Holt, operator of the Pit Stop Mobile station in Newport pleaded guilty to two counts of money laundering as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering. The charges stemmed from a joint undercover state and federal investigation into the operation of the market in 2014. Judge Rex Henry Ogle gave Holt eight years on probation in a negotiated resolution of the case. Asst. DA Tonya Thornton on Monday told Judge Carter Moore about Holt's recent offenses saying in September of last year, Holt was at Walmart in the self-check out lane with her daughter-in-law, Leah Burgin. "They were observed doing 'skip-scanning.' Ms. Holt was observed taking items from the basket and putting them in her purse. Officers found items valued at $176.53 in her purse that had never been paid for." As a result of that theft charge, Holt was charged with violating her probation. And she also was charged with failure to appear when she failed to appear in court to answer the probation violation charge. Judge Moore gave the defendant an 11 month 29 day term, released her on the time served and the balance of the sentence will be added on to the previously imposed term of supervised probation. She also has been banned from Walmart. Holt was elected to the Newport City Council in 2010, but was removed from her seat in September 2014, after the city council determined her address of residence was outside the city limits. Also on Monday, arrest warrants were issued for several defendants who did not appear for their scheduled hearings; Michael Eschelbacher, Drew Allen Gregg, Teresa Hurst, Whitney Loggans, Michael McMillian and Franklin Ezra Shropshire.
