White Pine fire injures five
A family of five was injured in a Wednesday morning fire which destroyed their home in White Pine. White Pine Fire Chief Chad Cotter who also serves as the Chief of the White Pine Volunteer Fire Department said the call to the Xavier and Miranda Curry mobile home on Bridle Way was received at 4:46 am. "Upon arrival on the scene we found the mobile home 75 percent involved in flames. The owner, his wife and three kids were in the home when he says he heard glass breaking and that is what woke him up. There were no smoke alarms in the house." A three year-old boy, Xaylen, sustained burns over 25 percent of his body and was flown by medical helicopter to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville. The other four members of the family, including a one year-old and a six month-old, were taken by ambulance to the Knoxvilel hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation Chief Cotter said there were portable heaters in the living room area and that is where the fire started, however the source of the fire remains under investigation. Dandridge and Kansas Talbott Volunteer Fire Departments assisted in controlling the blaze. Also assisting at the scene were the Jefferson County Sherriff's Department, White Pine Police Department and Jefferson County EMS. Chief Cotter said the Curry family lost virtually all of their belongings and so an effort is underway to gather clothes and other necessities. The American Red Cross also is assisting. A UT Medical Center spokesperson this morning said Xaylen is no longer a patient at that facility, indicating he has been transferred to another hospital.
