Solar is growing in the Valley
As coal loses it' grip on power generation, solar is growing in popularity in Tennessee. General Motors plans to power its Tennessee manufacturing plant entirely from the sun by 2022 under an agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority to purchase solar power from one of TVA's first utility-owned solar farms. The assembly plant in Spring Hill will get 100 megawatts of solar power from a plant near Columbus, Mississippi. GM is buying the renewable power through TVA's Green Invest program, which allows electric customers to use only renewable generation at the cost of the generation. As solar has become cheaper and public support for renewable energy has increased, more companies are opting to buy renewable energy to meet environmental performance goals. GM has a goal of getting all of its electricity from renewables in the United States by 2030. Spring Hill Manufacturing is the largest GM site in North America, totaling 2,100 acres, and currently builds the GMC Acadia and the Cadillac XT5 and XT6. Seven hundred acres of GM's Spring Hill facility are dedicated to farming, with an additional 100 acres dedicated to wildlife habitat, composing of wetlands and native grasses.
