Tucker enters guilty plea
The former manager of The Hideaway bar in Newport has pleaded guilty to sales tax evasion and theft. Melvin James Tucker, 50, Highway 321, Newport, was indicted by the Cocke County Grand Jury in October 2019 on charges of theft over $2,500 and nine counts of ales tax fraud, following an investigation by the Tennessee Department of Revenue. Tucker has been sentenced to three years probation and ordered to pay $2,944.50 in restitution. The indictment alleged that Tucker collected $2,944.50 in sales tax from July 2018 till March 2019, but did not remit it to the state “Most businesses in Tennessee remit the tax dollars they collect from customers,” Revenue Commissioner David Gerregano said. “This guilty plea should serve as a warning to those that believe they can get away with tax fraud. Our department remains committed to prosecuting tax evaders to ensure a level playing for all businesses.” The defendant could have received up to 12 years in prison. The case was investigated in cooperation with District Attorney James Dunn’s office.
