Bus occupants injured
Three occupants of a bus were injured Tuesday afternoon in a collision on Interstate 40 in Jefferson County. Trooper Erik Raines said the 5 pm crash occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near the 415 milemarker. Another crash had occurred earlier and two tractor trailer rigs were stopped on the roadway because of the congestion. A heavy rain had just ended and the roadway was wet. Witnesses said there was a heavy spray coming off the roadway making visibility difficult. The 2002 VanHool bus, operated by Maurice Saleeby, 73,Conway, SC, was unable to stop, sideswiping one of the stopped rigs operated by Jeramie Chastain, 40, Decatur, TN., and then continued on striking the second rig operated by Dorin Tenti, 31, Philadelphia, Pa. Saleeby was flown from the scene by medical helicopter to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville. Two passengers on the bus, Elliott Perkins, 40, and Cassie Perkins, 30, both of Conway, SC, were taken by Jefferson County EMS to the UT facility. The truck operators were not injured. After striking the two rigs, Trooper Raines says the bus traveled off the roadway to the right where it struck an embankment.
