I-81 crash involving THP
A Tennessee Highway Patrol officer and a trucker were injured Wednesday when their vehicles collided on Interstate 81 in Jefferson County. Trooper Sgt. Bobby Bullington said the 10:24 am crash occurred at the 1 mile marker of the interstate, in the northbound lanes. Trooper Ashlee Hill, 35, was operating her 2017 Ford Explorer patrol car with all of the emergency lights activated when she moved from the left lane, crossing the right lane, headed to the right shoulder of Interstate 81 North. Jeffrey Tanselle, 60, Phyllis, KY, operating a Mack tractor trailer, was traveling north in the right lane of the interstate. Trooper Hill crossed into the right lane, and into the path of the rig. Although Tanselle swerved to the right to avoid a collision, he was unable to avoid contact. The Mack truck struck the cruiser in the passenger side causing it to spin around several times and come to final rest, partially in the median of the northbound lanes. Tanselle was unable to control his rig and it rolled, blocking both northbound lanes of Interstate 81. Both drivers were sent to the hospital for treatment of the injuries they sustained in the crash.
