Crash injures Morristown women
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says two Morristown women were injured Friday when their auto went out of control on Interstate 40 in Jefferson County. Trooper Zandra Hall said 2011 Mazda was eastbound near the 417 milemarker at 10:48 am when the driver, Samantha Maddry, 27, lost control. “For unknown reasons, Maddry traveled off the road on the right at a high rate of speed. The vehicle traveled down an embankment, struck a tree, and caught on fire," the trooper said. First responders extinguished the fire and then used their jaws of life to free Maddry and her passenger, Breanna Dover, 27 also of Morristown. Maddry was wearing her seatbelt but Dover was not. Both women were taken to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville. Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Coffey says teamwork saved the lives of the two injured women, as evidenced by a video taken at the scene and posted on the departments Facebook page. "The area was on a hillside and treacherous as one of the first responders lost his footing during the extraction. Sgt. Mark Snowden steps into a yellow jackets nest and is stung 21 times to his legs and abdomen and a trooper with the Highway Patrol, who was behind Sgt. Snowden, was stung several times as well," the sheriff explained. "Sgt. Snowden was treated on the scene by paramedics for multiple bee stings. Both wreck victims were removed from the area and transported to UT suffering from multiple injuries. This video is a perfect example of the teamwork that happens daily by First Responders, so others may live!” Charges of driving on a suspended license, failure to provide insurance and violation of the due care law, are pending against the Maddry.
