Americans mourn the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Many Americans are mourning the passing of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday night after a battle with cancer. Dolly Parton, sent out a Saturday tweet, recognizing Ginsburg saying, “She was small in stature but even the tallest looked up to her. Her voice was soft but her message rang loud and clear and will echo forever. Thank you, RBG. Rest In Peace. Respectfully, Dolly Parton". United States Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) released a statement on Sunday saying he is in favor of moving forward with filling the US Supreme Court vacancy after the death of Justice Ginsburg. “No one should be surprised that a Republican Senate majority would vote on a Republican President’s Supreme Court nomination, even during a presidential election year. The Constitution gives senators the power to do it," observed Alexander. And he added "The voters who elected them expect it. Going back to George Washington, the Senate has confirmed many nominees to the Supreme Court during a presidential election year. It has refused to confirm several when the President and Senate majority were of different parties. Senator McConnell is only doing what Democrat leaders have said they would do if the shoe were on the other foot.” Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) says, “The Senate is going to do its job…. Those of us at the Judiciary Committee will do our due diligence. We will prepare properly for the hearing. I look forward to voting for a constitutionalist to go onto the Supreme Court.” Of possible candidates for the nomination, Blackburn says, "Barbara Lagoa would be the first Cuban American to serve on the Supreme Court. You also have other women who have served well at the circuit level who could elevate.” Soon after news of Ginsburg's passing was announced, Senator Mitch McConnell, a Republican, said that the full Senate will vote on President Donald Trump's Supreme Court Justice nomination. Democrats are calling for the appointment to be delayed until after the presidential election, to allow Joe Biden who is leading in the polls, to make the appointment.
