Cocke County schools address indoor sports seating
Members of the Cocke County School Board were told Tuesday evening that attendance at indoor sporting events in the system will be limited to 33 percent of capacity. Assistant Director Casey Kelley said attendance at football games has not been an issue because the game is played outdoors, but he expressed concern about exposure to the corona virus at basketball and volleyball games. He said TSSAA guidelines allow only limited attendance at indoor games. "Not every adult is going to get to watch a basketball game this year. Principals are considering alternatives to get as many fans in as possible. We want to make sure the kids get to play and so the adults are the ones that are going to have to sacrifice," Kelley told the board. Kelley said the system is in discussions with Horizon Media which may offer live streamed high school and elementary basketball games. He said there will be limited tickets sold and each athlete may be allotted a number of seats, to control the audience. Any decision, he said, will ensure fairness in seating to parents of both the home and visiting team. Each principal is currently calculating the number of spectators that will be allowed at each gymnasium. Director of Schools Manney Moore said efforts to guard against the pandemic have been successful in local schools, with the current quarantine involving just two staff members and one student. Board member Dr. Ken Johnson suggested that students may well be safer at school with strong enforcement of CDC guidelines than they would be out in the community with less strict pandemic controls. The board also approved the use of the right-of-way at Parrottsville School to access the site of the planned new library in Parrottsville.
