Courthouse mask mandate Cocke County Mayor Crystal Ottinger has declined to issue a county-wide mask mandate but on Wednesday announced that effective immediately, masks will be required for anyone entering the Cocke County Courthouse and the Courthouse Annex. The mayor says if anyone needs a mask, one will be provided. Previously a mask was required on the second floor of the courthouse but was not required in other areas. The mayor's move came after the Tennessee Supreme Court issued an order requiring face coverings for all persons who enter county courthouse in the state. The order also suspends jury trials from November 23 through January 31 of next year due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in the state, however an exemption can be granted by the Chief Justice; Video conferencing should be held whenever possible; No one with COVID-19 can participate in in-person proceedings and Judges are to schedule and conduct any in-person hearings to minimize wait times. Looking at local schools......last week Cocke County schools reported no new COVID cases among students or staff, Newport Grammar had fewer than five new cases among students or staff and Jefferson County reported 35 new student cases and fewer than five among staff last week.
