Race car driver dies in freak accident
Cocke County authorities say a young, up and coming dirt track race car driver, died Wednesday in a freak accident at the Cocke County Convenience Center on the Old Fifteenth Road in Hartford. Deputy Lt. Chris Gregg identified the victim as 17 year-old Ty Cole Veuleman, Many, Louisiana. The officer said upon arrival on the scene just before 6 pm, he found Stacey Veuleman, father of the victim, holding his son who was deceased. Matthew Engle said he was called by an unidentified friend about the incident and rushed to the scene in an attempt to help. He found the 1971 Ford pickup was partially on the victim's chest. Engle said he used a jack to raise the vehicle and then removed the victim from under the wheel of the truck. He found that the victim was not breathing. Lt. Gregg said he learned the victim had had trouble starting the truck. The father of the victim said he had to short out the solenoid swith to start the truck. Investigators say it appears the truck fell onto the right side of the victim. They determined that even though the truck showed to be in “Park”, it began rolling as the towing company attempted to load it after the accident. Ty Veuleman raced at the Thunder Valley dirt track in Louisiana, and last weekend he raced at Volunteer Speedway in the Crate Late Model National Championship.
