Rescue of calves leads to drowning
Authorities says a Dickson County farmer died Thursday as he attempted to rescue calves from his frozen pond. Donald Mitchell, 77, walked out onto the frozen pond to rescue two calves when the ice broke during the attempted rescue and he fell into the water. The victim's wife was with him at the time of the incident and she called 911. The Sheriff’s Department said the severe winter conditions slowed the response time for officials to respond to the scene. Although rescue crews were able to pull Mitchell from the pond, he did not survive.
