TBI asks for information in cold murder case
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation(TBI) is asking for the help of the public in its efforts to solve the "cold case" murder of a Newport woman. TBI spokeswoman Leslie Earhart says it has been more than 10 years since the body of 35 year-old Bernice "Little Bit" Cutshaw of Prospect Avenue, was found off Interstate 40 in Jefferson County. "On November 15, 2010, TBI agents responded to a request from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office to assist in a death investigation. The body of a woman had been found over the guardrail, just west of the I-40 rest area," Earhart said. The westbound rest area is located near the 424 milemarker, just east of Douglas Lake. TBI Agent JJ Sipos who responded to the scene said the body was discovered by employees of the Tennessee Department of Transportation who were doing maintenance work in the area. "It is our belief that the person involved, most likely a truck driver, was headed west in I-40 toward the I-81 split," Agent Sipos said. The cause of Cutshaw's death has not been released, but at the time of the discovery of the body, then Jefferson County Sheriff GW "Bud" McCoig said, "The autopsy confirmed that the death is a homicide but we are not releasing the cause of death at this time". Family members in Marshall, North Carolina told the sheriff at the time that the victim had moved to Cocke County several years earlier. Cutshaw grew up in North Carolina, one of eight children. Her older brother, Harold, has fond memories of Bernice who he says was independent and knew how to stand up for herself. He said it is difficult not knowing what happened to his younger sister, and he has just one request of those who were acquainted with her the months before she was murdered. "Tell who it was that did it, or just give someone the information without even showing their face, "he pleads."Give them any lead, any trail, any fragment of information, to get the investigators back on the right trail." Earhart asks that anyone who saw Bernice Cutshaw in the days leading up to her death, or witnessed anything suspicious around the rest area on November 14, 2010, or the following day, contact her agency. Information may be relayed by calling 800-TBI-FIND, or email to TipsToTBI@tn.gov.
