CJ Ball announces candidacy for Sheriff Chief Cocke County Sheriff's Deputy CJ Ball announced Saturday he will be a candidate for Cocke County Sheriff in the Republican primary next year. Sheriff Armondo Fontes had earlier announced he will not be a candidate for re-election. Ball has been in local law enforcement for 21 years, beginning as a corrections officer in the jail. More recently the candidate has taught at the Walters State East Tennessee Regional Law Enforcement Academy and serves as a driving instructor for the academy along with advanced driving in the In Service training. He has an Associates degree in Law Enforcement from Walters State Community College and soon will graduate with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from Bethel University. "I feel that my experience, leadership, and community support will help this county grow towards greater success," says Ball. "I want to run a very clean campaign against all candidates and promote positivity and professionalism for our community." The candidate points out that as an employee of the sheriff's department, state law prohibits him from campaigning while on duty.
