More Tennessee children have insurance
The number of uninsured children in Tennessee declined 4.4 percent between 2008 and 2012, according to a report released today. Federal officials reported that an additional 1,386 children qualified for TennCare as of February when compared to last summer. That follows a trend noted in the report because coverage by public insurance programs increased. Private coverage for children sank to 59 percent in 2012, compared to 64.2 percent four years earlier. The percentage of children of all racial groups without insurance was 5.9 percent in Tennessee as of 2012, which is less than the national average of 7.5 percent.
