The fireflies are coming! The fireflies are coming back. Get ready for a special light show once again in the Smokies. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park announced on Tuesday that they will indeed host the annual synchronous firefly viewing at Elkmont…Nature’s show will begin on Tuesday, June 1 through the following Tuesday, June 8. The public may apply for limited passes to view the annual firefly show by entering a lottery for a vehicle pass through www.recreation.gov. You can also call 1-877-444-6777 to enter the lottery. The lottery opens for vehicle pass applications this Friday, April 30 at 10:00 a.m. …applications will be taken through Monday, May 3 at 11:59 p.m. Each year from late May to early June, thousands of visitors gather near the Elkmont Campground in the national park to observe the natural phenomenon of a firefly species that flashes in synchronization, putting on quite the light show. 100 passes for each night, will be issued through the lottery process for a total of 800 passes. Results of the lottery will be made available by Friday, May 7.
