Barnes charged with violating sex offender restrictions
A Cocke County man who is a registered violent sex offender, was arrested Tuesday on charges he violated provisions of the sex offender registration act. Corrections Officer Lt. Anthony Horne was contacted by Middlesboro, Kentucky police who had received a complaint from a female who said William Jason Barnes, 33, Old Sevierville Highway, Newport had tried to friend her on Facebook. Barnes is registered with the Cocke County Sheriff's Office and the female who was contacted, allegedly was a victim of Barnes who was convicted in 2002. Lt Horne says Barnes did not notify the local sheriff's department that he had an email account associated with his Facebook page, or that he had a Facebook account. The officer said Barnes is prohibited from contacting his victim and he also had not reported his Facebook and email information. As a result the defendant is charged with residential and work restrictions for sex offenders and registering and reporting requirements for sex offenders.
