Hommel charged in alleged assault
A Parrottsville man faces charges after he allegedly pointed a handgun at a member of the Newport City Council who chairs the Newport Utilities Board of Directors. Derek Clint Hommel, 33, Grandeur Avenue, Parrottsville, was charged with aggravated assault by Alderman Kenny Morgan and Newport Detective Lynn Shults. He is free on a $2,000 bond. The warrant says Morgan was traveling on North Street with his 14 year-old daughter on Monday, when he met a pickup truck and the male driver stuck his arm out toward Morgan. In turn Morgan followed the pickup , and when the vehicles stopped Morgan was preparing to open his door when he looked up and "observed a silver handgun up to the chest of Mr. Hommel and he was pointing it at Mr. Morgan." Morgan says he then drove away for the safety of he and his daughter. He says he saw his ex-wife, Vistoria Morgan, in the passenger seat of the Hommel vehicle. The warrant says at 7:30p.m., Victoria Morgan called her daughter to say the gun was not loaded at the time of the incident. Morgan filed a petition for an order of protection saying he was concerned that Hommel was going to shoot him when the gun was pointed at him. The petitioner says his 14 and 16 year-old children have told him they are afraid of Mr. Hommel. Cocke County General Sessions Judge John Bell issued a temporary order of protection on Tuesday which prohibits Hommel from contacting or coming about Morgan or his children. In addition, Hommel is restrained from injuring or threatening to injure animals that are kept by Morgan or his children.
