Crum again charged with animal cruelty
A Cocke County woman has again been charged with animal cruelty after seven dogs were removed from her residence this week. Sheriff Armando Fontes and Detective Kevin Benton said they responded to the Welch Road, Newport home of Ella Mae Crum, 63, where they found alleged "horrid conditions." The officers said there was a large amount of trash covering the entire floor, with dog and cat feces and clothing, bedding and furniture soaked in urine. The animals were in poor condition and appeared to need medical care. In addition, they had no water and the food was outside. Traps also have been set to catch additional animals Currently Crum is charged with four counts of animal cruelty and additional charges are pending. The sheriff says the defendant was charged 25 counts of animal cruelty in 2011 when her animals were left in similar conditions. That case was dismissed with the understanding that Crum not possess more than three pets at one time.
