Tennesseans urged to donate blood
The summer may be winding down, but the need for blood donors in Tennessee is up. Sue Thesenga, with a blood collection agency, says there are generally fewer blood donations during the summer months compared with other times of the year, in part because people are busy with summer vacations, projects and because school is out of session. "Twenty percent of our blood donations come from high school and college blood drives during the academic school year," says Thesenga, "so right there we experience a drop in blood donations." Thesenga encourages people of all blood types to consider donating, although people with O-negative blood are especially in demand year-round. "O-negative is the universal blood type, which can be transfused to anyone with any blood type," she says. "That's critical in emergency situations when there might not be time to type the blood." Nationwide, more than 41,000 blood donations are needed each day to ensure an adequate supply.
