Candidates qualify for November election
Noon Thursday was the deadline for candidates to qualify for the November 4 election for Mayor, Alderman and School Board in Newport, as well as Commissioner in Parrottsville. Those qualifying for Mayor in Newport are; Connie Ball (I), Morrell Street, Claude D. Gatlin, Jr. Sixth Street and Kyle B. Shute, College Street. Those qualifying for an Alderman seat on the five member Newport City Council are; John M. Bugg (I), North Cecil Street; Bill Costner (I), Centerview Street; Lori Dover Deering, Lookout Drive; Rebecca Ellison, North Susong Street; Jeffrey C. Fancher, Washington Avenue; Freddie Gregg (I), First Street; Roger W. Gribble, Smithwood Avenue; Michael Hansel, Smith Street; Linda Hampton-Parker, Mountainview Street; Kathy Hall Holt (I), Ratcliff Street; Bobby Knight, Jaybird Road; Michael Kyker, Filbert Street; Mike Proffitt, Woodlawn Avenue; Jayne Ann Ragan, Justus Street; Kandee Clevenger Veridal, Buckingham Drive; and Billy Wise, Beech Street. Two incumbent school board members have qualified for re-election, and will be unopposed; Malcolm (Mickey) Powers, North Street, and Jan Brooks Sneed, Hawkins Street. Those who have qualified for the three member board of commissioners in Parrottsville are; Thad Balch, Old Parrottsville Highway, Dewayne "Doodle" Daniel, South Highway 340, Ronnie Hommel, Grandeur Avenue, Jerry Hux, Old Parrottsville Highway and Judy Reed (I), Parrotts Circle. The candidates have until noon on August 28, to withdraw from the ballot.
