Purkey injured in bicycle/ pickup collision It was David W. Purkey, who's bicycle was hit on Friday in Cocke County, but not the former Mayor of Hamblen County. Cocke County Deputy Lt. Ricky Holt said David Perkey, Sr., 62, Fish Hatchery Road, Morristown, was hit at about 10 am. Ronnie Wayne Rader, Sr., 39, Trentham Hollow Road, Parrottsville, told Lt. Holt he was traveling south on Trentham Hollow Road and as he approached Luther Memorial Road, he applied the brakes in his 2006 GMC pickup truck. The officer said the brakes gave out causing Rader to cross onto Luther Memorial Road and strike Perkey who was riding his bicycle. The cyclist was thrown from his bike, landing on the ground several feet away. Perkey told the officer he was unable to avoid the collision. Officer Holt said there was brake fluid under the pickup truck, indicating a brake fluid line had broken on the vehicle, when Rader tried to stop. Perkey who reportedly was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Newport Medical Center by First Call EMS, for treatment of minor scrapes and bruises. In addition he told Lt. Holt he has a history of issues with his back and so he wanted a medical evaluation.
