Newport fire Newport and state fire investigators are looking into a Sunday morning blaze which heavily damaged a Filbert Street duplex. Firefighters responded to the fire just before 7 am, to find the side of the two story structure, as well as the porch roof, fully engulfed in flame. Battalion Chief Mike Ottinger said a unit which had recently been vacated was a total loss and the second unit, occupied by Mary Ann Jenkins and Sharon Butler, sustained minor damage. The two women escaped the blaze without injury. The damage to the structure, and contents is estimated at $38,500. The duplex is owned by Kenny Myers according to Newport Sgt. Matthew Elliott. Although Myers told investigators that the home was unrented, he believes squatters may have been staying in the apartment. Jenkins told officers she heard a noise outside the duplex and saw people putting clothes into a car about 15 minutes before the blaze was discovered. A fire investigator told Sgt. Elliott that the fire appeared to have been started at several locations throughout the structure. A total of 12 firefighters responded to the scene, and utilized four engines in the firefighting effort. Although the cause of the blaze is undetermined, the investigation is continuing.
