New cell phone tower regulations
The Newport Board of Zoning has approved regulations for cell towers in the city, which will be presented to the city council for it's approval. There were concerns that because the city had no regulations in place, a site plan for a cell tower near the Newport Presbyterian Church had to be approved in September. Verizon plans to put up a 165 foot tower, between Hedrick Drive and Wiley Street. The new regulations require a special permit for the construction of a tower or antenna in all zoning classifications. No new tower will be permitted unless the applicant can demonstrate that no existing tower or structure can accommodate the proposed antenna. New towers must be at least seventy-five percent of the height of the tower from the property line, and must be at least 200 feet from any residential unit. They must be enclosed by a security fence, and buffered with plant materials. Also existing terrain and tree growth must be preserved as much as possible.
