Sex offender arrested at Carson Newman
Authorities say a sex offender who was illegally living in a Carson-Newman University apartment, was arrested Thursday by Jefferson City police. Justin Lapale Shepard, 28, of Las Vegas, was living with a female student in Green Brier Apartments on West College Street. He is a convicted sex offender, convicted of statutory sexual seduction in Nevada in August, 2007. Shepard had registered with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, however authorities determined he was living within 1,000 feet of a campus child development center as well as a public park, and so was told he could not stay at the apartments. The subject who has no affiliation with the university, is being held in the Jefferson County Justice Center on a violation of the Sex Offender Registry Act. Police arrested Shepard after receiving a tip that he was still living at the residence hall. He told authorities he had been staying with his girlfriend. Carson-Newman University released a statement saying the safety and security of it's students and campus has always been paramount. The school says it cooperated with law enforcement investigating the case and will continue to assist in any way needed.
