Cocke County Grand Jury action
cke County Grand Jury is continuing to hear cases today after considering more than 80 cases on Monday. Assistant Prosecutor Tonya Thornton told Judge Ben Hooper, who accepted the report, that the panel returned 61 sealed presentments, 22 indictments and declined to indict on another case. A statement by the panel says it heard evidence presented by Detective Robert Thornton with regard to the February 18 shooting death of Robbie Evans. "The grand Jury has decided that probable cause does not exist to charge Dillon Denton with any crime," according to the statement signed by by Grand Jury Foreman David Hill. In the incident, Evans,36, Huff Road, Cosby, died of a single blast from a 12 gauge shotgun. Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes at the time said Dillon Denton, Williams Road, Hartford alleged his home was burglarized earlier that day and he later met Evans who was driving a utility truck. "According to Denton, Evans was in possession of a stolen shotgun as well as other personal property which apparently was taken from the Denton residence. They met on the roadway by chance," the sheriff said Denton reportedly asked Evans to pull over so he could retrieve his items. A struggle ensued over the shotgun which discharged, resulting a fatal single gunshot wound to Mr. Evans. Sheriff Fontes told the NewsSource that Denton said the shooting was in self-defense. A pistol found in the back pocket of Mr. Evans also had reportedly been taken from the Denton home. In addition, the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado utility truck being driven by Evans, had been reported stolen from Mission Hospital in Asheville several days earlier. n other indictments; Bradley Shelton, 23, Bundy Road, Newport, is charged with filing a false police report and theft over $1,000. The indictments allege that while Shelton was an inmate in the Cocke County Jail in July, 2015 he deliberately broke his arm or had it broken by another inmate, because he was having withdrawal from prescription medication. The inmate had called his mother prior to the incident asking if she was going to come to the hospital to visit him because he was preparing to break his arm. Initially the inmate told jail personnel that he broke his arm when he passed out during the drug withdrawal. Shelton was treated at the Newport Medical Center resulting in a bill of $6,522.39. Beau Holloway, 21, Mellow Road,Newport is charged with aggravated perjury because he allegedly told General Sessions Judge Brad Davidson he had a job and was going to school which allegedly was not true. Richard William Phillips, Jr, 29, Morningside Way, Newport. is charged with two counts statutory aggravated rape, involving a 17 year-old victim. Richard Dent Gentry, 35, Ivanhoe Road, Morristown, is charged with rape, sexual battery by an authority figure and incest involving a victim under the age of 18. He also is being held for Kansas authorities for alleged offenses in that state. Natasha Swafford, 30, Raines Road, Newport is charged with theft over $500 and filing a false police report. She allegedly stole an Ipad belonging to Walters State Community College , and then gave a false statement to law officers.
