Swaggerty conviction
A federal jury has convicted a Cocke County man of two counts being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. In April, 2015, Freddie Swaggerty, 51, Jimtown Road, Newport, walked up to former Detective Jason Oury and other officers who were chatting outside of the courthouse. Swaggerty engaged in conversation, during which one of the officers observed the handle of a handgun protruding from Swaggerty's pocket. The officer knew that Swaggerty is a convicted felon and prohibited from possession of a firearm. But when officers attempted to remove the weapon, the subject allegedly tried to put his hand into his pocket where the handgun was located. Eventually the pistol was removed, and upon further questioning, Swaggerty admitted he had another pistol in another pocket. That gun was recovered a swell. Investigators said the subject has convictions for multiple felonies, including drug convictions and has served served terms in prison. The weapons, a.38 Special and a .22 Derringer, both were loaded where they were recovered. If Judge Leon Jordan finds that Swaggerty is an armed career criminal, he will be facing 15 years to life in prison.
