Black bear incidents Cocke County authorities report an increase in the number of black bears being struck by vehicles this year. Three bears were reportedly struck so far this week in the county. Monday night a bear was hit on East Highway 25/70 but survived, and there were reports of another incident over the weekend. Late Tuesday evening a bear was struck on I-40 near the 451 milemarker. Deputy Sgt. Bob Schaff said a Knoxville man was westbound just after 10 p.m. when he hit a dead bear in the roadway. Investigators believe the bear had been struck by a truck and killed a short time earlier. The occupants of the car were uninjured however Sgt. Schaff says the car sustained disabling damage in the incident.
