Rankin is indicted
A mother who's child was thrown from her car as she traveled on Interstate 40 in Cocke County, on April 8, now has been arrested on a sealed presentment returned by a Cocke County Grand Jury. Brittany Rankin, 19, Classic Road, Newport, was arrested this week by Newport Patrol Officer Mike Robey on charges of vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, DUI, no driver's license, failure to exercise due care and violation of the child restraint law. Rankin was eastbound on the interstate when she rounded a curve, veered off the shoulder, over-corrected, and hit a cable barrier. The vehicle then rolled and her two month-old son, Landon, was thrown from the vehicle through a window. The defendant maintains she had fastened her son in a child restraint seat. The child was sent to East Tennessee Children's Hospital, where he reportedly underwent surgery. Bond for Rankin is set at $50,000 in the case that was investigated by Trooper Erik Raines, and indicted in June.
