Widner involved in fatal Grainger County crash
A Cocke County woman was injured Friday in a two vehicle crash in Grainger County which claimed the lives of the two occupants in the other car. Vernie L. Widner, 60, of Newport was operating a 2003 Chevrolet when she was hit at the intersection of Highway 25E and Lakeshore Drive in Grainger County. Trooper Shawn Good said the crash occurred just after 11 a.m. when Tammy Pique, 46, attempted a left turn onto Highway 25E and pulled into the path of Widner. Both Pique and her passenger Don Dalton, 78 died in the crash. They both were residents of Rutledge. Both Widner and her passenger, Tony Dalton, 45 of Rutledge were injured in the crash, however Trooper Good's report does not indicate to which hospital they were taken. The officer said all four occupants of the two cars were wearing seat belts, and he does not believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
