Autopsy ordered in Hill death
Investigators say the death of a Cocke County Jail inmate on Wednesday likely was the result of a medical issue however an autopsy has been ordered and the investigation is continuing. Sheriff Armando Fontes said at 11:15 p.m. a corrections officer was assisting Amanda Hill, 32 to check her blood sugar level when she collapsed and lost consciousness. "The corrections officer immediately called for assistance, 911 was called and corrections officers performed CPR on Hill who was unresponsive with no pulse," the sheriff said. Officers also used an Automated External Defibrillator in an attempt to revive Hill, but that also was unsuccessful. The sheriff said there is no evidence of physical trauma. Inmate Hill was being held on violation of probation out of circuit court and had been in jail for only 48 hours. Sheriff Fontes says Hill had an extensive history of abusing controlled substances, and was being treated for burns she had sustained as a result of an aggravated assault by her ex-boyfriend Josh Moore on September 1. Newport police said Moore allegedly threatened to kill the victim, and when she rried to flee the Old Knoxville Highway home, he poured rubbing alcohol over Hill's body and set her on fire with a lighter. Hill was sent to a burn center for treatment after the incident. The sheriff said it will take three to four months to obtain a finalized medical report. He commended the jail staff for doing all they could in handling the emergency situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hill Family. We ask for the community to remember in prayer this family as well as our corrections officers who are affected by Hills death.
