Cocke School Board meets
Members of the Cocke County School Board were told Tuesday that the Well Child program is loosing money. Rita McNabb, head of the school nurse program, said the Well Child program is important to students and staff who are treated by nurse practitioners at Cocke County High and Northwest Elementary. There are on-going discussions regarding the possible expansion of the program to other schools, parents of students and family members of school employees. Dr. Mitzi Hall, a Cocke County High teacher who coaches soccer, called on the board to support a program to require stretches by athletes before all practice and games. She said the Prevent Injury and Enhance Performance (PEP) program, reduces injuries by 75-85 percent. That means fewer injuries and less time away from academics. The board went on record endorsing a stretching program before all athletic events. And the Board approved a plan to construct a basketball court at Bridgeport School, as a memorial to drowning victim Tyler Sisk. Hommel Concrete is donating the concrete for the 35' X 65' court, and the school will be responsible for forming the area as, well as paying for the concrete finishers at a cost of $1,200. The board will pay for two basketball goals for the court at a cost of $1,682.
