Cocke County Legislative Body The Cocke County Legislative Body agreed Tuesday evening to extend the current contract with First Call EMS for five years. The county subsidy to the firm will increase by 2.5 percent annually under the agreement. Members agreed to a transfer of $65,000 from property confiscated by the sheriff's department, to other department needs. Funds will go to confidential drug enforcement, law enforcement equipment and vehicles for the drug fund. Commissioner Jimmy Lindsey invited any members of the body to participate in the Litter Index Survey, conducted by Keep Cocke County Beautiful, and planned for February. The survey assists in determining if the community is making progress toward making it's roadsides more attractive. Commissioner Terry Dawson questioned whether funding obtained last year to upgrade low income housing in the community is being spent. County Attorney Carter Moore said he received information that the funding has been frozen because the county does not have building codes. The attorney said he has written state officials a letter in an attempt to resolve the issue. Commissioner Robert Green questioned the status of the commission ratified resolution calling on state officials to oppose same-sex marriage. On March 2 of last year, the Tennessee House of Representatives sent a message to the U.S. Supreme Court, by passing a resolution expressing disagreement with the high court’s landmark decision legalizing same-sex marriage. With a 73-18 vote, the chamber passed the measure to not only disagree with the constitutional analysis used by the high court but also to say the “judicial imposition of a natural marriage license law” is contrary to previous actions taken by the Tennessee legislature.
