Cocke County Partnership meet
Members of the Cocke County Partnership and Economic Development Commission were told Thursday that engineering studies are continuing to determine if a 700 acre tract off Highway 25E and West Highway 25/70, is suitable for an industrial park. Studies are focusing on the feasibility of a rail spur over Sinking Creek, and are expected to be completed this month. Partnership President Lucas Graham told the board that Project All-Star is currently in the design and cost analysis stage and an economic impact study is being conducted by a third party. It is to be completed by early March. Another proposal, Project Villa, is to be presented to the Industrial Development Board for consideration as a TIF (tax increment financing) project. The Cocke County Legislative Body then is expected to consider the plan at it's March meeting. Also Project Adventure is currently in the design, cost analysis and capital recruitment phase, to be followed by an economic impact study. An environmental study of the former ACE site on Industrial Road has been completed, and the findings were minimal.A project to empty and backfill an underground tank will be required, however no leakage was detected. A downtown marketing study has been completed and discussions with investors are continuing. Graham also reported he will present at the TVA Community Showcase on March 6. TVA job recruiters will be on hand to learn about the assets of investing in Cocke County, and it's available sites. Tourism Director Linda Lewanski reported that a group of national writers will visit the region in the near future, with an eye to promoting available rental cabins, and to emphasize that "the region is still intact". The recent wildfire in Sevier County destroyed a number of rental cabins, but many are still available locally. She reported that two Cocke County residents recently were chosen as the outstanding volunteers of the year by Volunteer Tennessee. David Veridal received the award for his efforts in litter pickup and beautification. Alexa Austin received the young adult award after she raised $9,000 for Alheimer's research and awareness. Chamber Director Lynn Ramsey said her office will host the Smoky Mountains Reconnect staff on February 23, at the Community Center. The public session, 4-6 p.m. will present information regarding free tuition for those 25 and older who want to further their education. A February 24 Industry and Education meeting is scheduled in an effort to open lines of communication, and to assist local students in preparing for the workforce. The annual High School College Career Day is planned for February 28. The Eighth Annual Legislative Breakfast is planned for March 3 at the Carson Springs Convention Center. Tickets may be obtained at the Chamber office. The Rhythm on the River summer concert series will begin on June 1, on the Pigeon River walkway. Mountain Edge, a local bluegrass band, will provide the entertainment.
