KCCB Update
Members of Keep Cocke County Beautiful(KCCB) met Friday and were told that the operation which utilizes jail inmates to recycle items, in 2016 pulled 1,480 pounds of mixed paper from the waste stream, as well as 169,780 pounds of cardboard. David Veridol, a volunteer who supervises the inmates said much of the cardboard came from the county convenience centers. Funds from the recycled aluminum cans picked up along the roadway as well as the recycled cardboard, allowed Veridol to purchase a $1,775 trailer which is being used to transport the recyclables and other trash picked up along county roads. Executive Director of KCCB, Meka Henderson, said a Conservation Field day is planned for May 9 and 10 at the Newport City park. The event will be attended by fourth graders from across the county. A cleanup of Douglas Lake, in conjunction with the Great American Clean-up, is planned for March 11. A household hazardous waste and electronics recycling event is planned for March 25 in the Lowe's store parking lot. This year the event also will collect canned food and gently used items for Pay it Forward ministries. And tattered flags will be accepted for disposal. The organization also is encouraging local groups to Adopt a Highway in their local community. Details on adopting a highway are available by contacting Henderson at 423-623-1050.
