Gregory arrest/fire Cocke County authorities have charged a suspect in the burglary of a home after it burned Monday afternoon, as well as other offenses. Detective Lt. C.J. Ball has charged Sean M. Gregory, 33, Misty Ridge Way, Newport with aggravated burglary of a residence, burglary of a business, fraudulent use of a credit card and four counts burglary of an auto. The detective said the charges stem from "a string of burglaries in the Cosby community." The Cocke County Fire Department and Cosby Volunteer firefighters responded to the Jack Lingerfelt mobile home on Misty Ridge Way, Newport, just after 4 pm to find the home heavily damaged by flames. Lingerfelt who is a long distance trucker, had left the home on Sunday, but family members said he may not have completely extinguished the fire in his wood stove. The owner told Deputy Logan Starritt he did not suspect foul play, and that there was no insurance on the $65,000 home. Firefighters were called back to the scene twice Tuesday morning, after walls fell in and the embers re-ignited, according to Fire Captain Clayton "Skip" Ellison. When Lingerfelt arrived back at his home, Tuesday evening, he discovered a pistol with 100 rounds of ammunition, and his 12 gauge shotgun were missing. Officer Starritt said it appeared that a burglar went through the home after the fire, taking the items valued at $535. Now Gregory has been charged with that burglary. He also is charged with burglarizing the office of Triple Creek Campground, burglary of a vehicle and the fraudulent use of a credit card belonging to Rebecca Holden, Lower Bogard Road, Newport, which was parked at the campground. He also is charged with the burglary of three autos owned by John Jepson, Cosby Highway, Newport. The suspect was arrested at the scene of the fire after he ran from Deputy Logan Starritt who had gone to the location to investigate the burglary. Gregory ran when the officer arrived but was stopped by his mother, and was jailed on a charge of resisting arrest.
