Walters Bridge dropped into Douglas Lake
Walters Bridge dropped into Douglas Lake Monday morning. But it all was planned. The portion of the bridge in Jefferson County had been dropped earlier and Monday's blast dealt only with the portion in Cocke County. The Walters Bridge Boat Ramp at Douglas Lake was closed by TWRA for the demolition. Historians said the bridge built in 1934 was historically significant as an extremely unusual design of cantilever truss, perhaps one of the only examples of a cantilever that was designed to be so simple. Technologically, it was significant for being a creative design for a cantilever truss, and it is possible that the simple design was an attempt to reduce the cost of the bridge.
