Rolfe wants to boost workers skille
Tennessee’s new Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe told a group of economic development officials in the Tri Cities on Friday that his focus will be on workforce development and business recruitment to create jobs. “If we’re going to be competitive, we want to put our best foot forward and that means having all the tools in the toolbox,” Rolfe said. He said those tools include science, technology, engineering and manufacturing education and training for entrepreneurs. And Rolfe said it is important to have a “large inventory of shovel-ready sites”, those sites ready for construction. The department’s goal, according to Rolfe, is to create 25,000 jobs in the state this year. "Automation is here to stay; technology is here to stay,” argues Rolfe. “When a company comes to Tennessee and wants to talk about new jobs, new technology and new capital investment, we think one of the game-changers is going to be our workforce because we’ve got all the other infrastructure." “We’re going to use our TCAT, the Colleges of Applied Technology]... to basically help us to recruit. ... We’re going to have to spend whatever resources to make sure we have a more educated workforce.” The commissioner said $30 million came to the TNECD from the federal government last year, so he hopes federal cuts won’t impact Tennessee, and he is concerned that the Trump budget proposal will cut those funds. A total of 21,063 jobs were created in Tennessee last year. Rolfe also believes it’s important for Tennessee to support entrepreneurship and technology.
