Morris arrest A Newport man faces charges following a Sunday morning pursuit from O'Neil Road in Cocke County to near the Gatlinburg High School where the vehicle left the roadway. Deputy Lt. Chris Gregg said he observed Kevin Burgess Morris, 35, Collins Street, Newport, with a passenger who was unrestrained. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, Morris fled on the gravel road, and slid across the roadway. During the ensuing pursuit, Morris was traveling in the oncoming lane on occasion and he ran four stop signs. Eventually, two tires on the vehicle went down and the Hyundai left the roadway. The unidentified female passenger told Deputy Wes Keys she asked Morris to stop several times during the pursuit but he told her to "shut up or he would shoot her." In the auto, officers found a loaded syringe with suspected methamphetamine, digital scales and ammunition. Now Morris is named on warrants charging him with DUI, his sixth offense driving on a revoked license, possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, evading arrest by motor vehicle, aggravated assault, reckless driving and reckless endangerment. He also has been cited into court on charged of ignoring a traffic control device, no insurance, driving left of center, and driving on roadways laned for traffic.
