Tennessee Senate action
State Senator Steve Southerlan says the Senate tackled a wide variety of issues last week as it prepare to close the legislative session. The state's budget is about to move front and center on the agenda. Tennessee loses an estimated $123 Million per year in fraudulent welfare payments. Legislation designed to combat welfare fraud in Tennessee was approved by the Senate State and Local Government Committee. It requires state agencies to communicate with each other to identify individuals who are receiving benefits for which they are not eligible. It also authorizes DHS to join a multistate cooperative for identifying individuals who currently receive Tennessee benefits but who live in other states. Legislation advanced to aid local ambulance services in Tennessee by implementing a quarterly coverage assessment. The fee would be placed in a fund, allowing the state to receive additional federal dollars from Medicaid to be redistributed to the local private and public ambulance services for transporting patients covered by program. The bill is expected to generate nearly $20 million in additional federal funds. A bill reaffirms that domestic violence offenders are prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm. Defendants who have been convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor are prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm under both U.S. and Tennessee laws. The Senate approved Legislation that permanently changes the way Tennessee manages its State Aid Road Grant Program. The bill makes it easier for counties to access state funds to upgrade, repair, and improve roads. It allows counties to use state highway aid for projects as long as they contribute at least two percent of the approved project cost or provide in-kind work as approved by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
