Brooks and Mason file appeal
Attorneys for two men recently sentenced in Cocke County Circuit Court have filed notice of appeal of the sentences. Alfred Brooks, Jr., 46, Upper Bison Road, Newport, indicted for First Degree Murder in the slaying of his live-in girlfriend, Suzanne Perez, was ordered to serve a 10 year sentence on May 2, by Judge Ben Hooper. Brooks had previously pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of Voluntary Manslaughter as well as Simple Possession of Marijuana. The defendant held law officers at bay for several hours after the shooting the evening of July 18, 2016, necessitating the deployment of SWAT teams. The name of the victim was released in late 2016, however her family members have still not been notified of her death, because they have not been located. Perez was 52 years-old. The appeal of the sentence was filed by Asst. Public Defender Keith Haas. On April 21, Judge Rex Henry Ogle ordered Charles 'Chucky' Mason, Jr., 38, Happy Hollow Road, Parrottsville, to serve a 20-year sentence as a Range II offender to the aggravated assault of three individuals. In February, 2016 Mason was placed on supervised probation for 20 years as a Range II offender to the aggravated assault of three individuals. But the court heard later that Mason had been tampering with his GPS ankle monitor. The defendant also admitted to using methamphetamine and tested positive for Suboxone, he was not wearing a required drug patch and his GPS battery was dead. As a result, Judge Ogle ordered Mason to build his sentence, meaning the service of seven years before the defendant is eligible for parole. The appeal notice was filed by Defense Attorney Troy L. Bowlin, II.
